Wally Pipp was the Yankees 1st baseman from 1915 to June 2, 1925. He was an excellent player for them leading the league in home runs in 1916 & 1917, finished 8th in the MVP voting in 1922, and then helped them win their 1st of now 27 World Series wins in 1923. The reason we know it was specifically June 2, 1925 was because he had a headache and on a whim manager Miller Huggins scratched him from the game. His replacement was a young up and comer named Lou Gehrig. Gehrig ended up being in the lineup for only straight 2,130 games garnering his nickname the Iron Horse. In short, there's never been a better 1st baseman in MLB history.
